A pro-life group’s report claims that abortions have increased nationwide due to a Biden administration FDA policy allowing abortion pills to be prescribed via telehealth and shipped by mail, with chemical abortions now making up 63% of all abortions in 2023.
The report estimates that there were approximately 170,000 more abortions in 2024 than if the abortion rate had remained at 2019 levels, and the group argues that the Trump administration could reverse the Biden-era policy to reduce the number of abortions.
The FDA policy under Biden removed safety standards requiring in-person doctor visits for mifepristone prescriptions, leading to concerns about the safety of mail-order chemical abortions and prompting calls for reinstating safeguards or removing the drug from the market.
