Democrats don’t want Americans to know if abortion pills are contaminating America’s drinking water.

Senate Democrats demanded Thursday that the Environmental Protection Agency stop plans to test drinking water for the abortion pill mifepristone. Never mind that such pills could cause miscarriages or other problems for Americans nationwide.

Led by pro-abortion Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, the entire Senate Democratic Conference signed a letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin urging him to remove mifepristone, misoprostol and their metabolites from a list of emerging contaminants targeted for surveillance.

“This action is a stark departure from past EPA practice and serves to further this administration’s attacks on reproductive health care and distracts from your agency’s critical role protecting Americans from known chemical pollutants in our water systems,” the Democrats wrote. “It is deeply alarming that this kind of radical, anti-science campaign might have an audience at the EPA.”

The testing is not part of the agency’s routine update to the Safe Drinking Water Act’s contaminant list.

But pro-life groups, including Students for Life of America, have long pressed the EPA to examine whether the drugs are contaminating water supplies after chemical abortions, which have become the most common method since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins responded by challenging the 47 Democratic senators to review peer-reviewed research on the issue and called their letter “a compliment to our efforts.”

“It’s flattering, in a way, for legislators to confirm that Students for Life is having an impact on the conversation about abortion water pollution. Thanks for noticing,” Hawkins said. “But we are challenging Democratic members to actually read our emails when they see them along with the peer-reviewed study that is a fact check to their claims. The Democrats’ letter is categorically false. Peer-reviewed science shows mifepristone and mifepristone equivalents are in the water. Studies in other countries show the same.”

Hawkins added that “logic alone would indicate that if you dump more than 50 tons of pathological medical waste into our drinking water every year for 20 years, problems could result,” questioning why chemical abortion pills are treated differently from other medical waste. The group has also filed comments under the Safe Drinking Water Act and a notice of intent to sue the FDA under the Endangered Species Act over distribution of the pills.

Students for Life Vice President Kristi Hamrick said the organization believes risks of microdosing by an endocrine blocker in drinking water need study, noting that mifepristone and equivalents carry risks to humans, aquatic life and animals.

“You don’t have to be pro-life to want clean drinking water,” Hawkins said.
